July Mission Focus

The Sager Brown Depot is located in beautiful Baldwin, Louisiana – smack dab in the middle of Cajun Country! It is one of two locations UCMOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) has to collect, inspect, assemble and ship relief supplies around the world whenever a need arises. Windcrest UMC mission volunteers are familiar with Sager Brown as it has been one of our favorite places to go for mission trips. For many years, groups have made the journey to Sager Brown for a week of mission work and fun. We even have a few members who serve as long term volunteers as well.

Each year, more than 2,000 volunteers from around the nation, prepare about $5 million in supplies for shipment from the Baldwin, LA facility. UMCOR Sager Brown reaches out to its local neighbors through food distribution and housing rehabilitation projects, engaging volunteers in these projects that help families and the elderly. They also assist with building of ramps for the elderly and disable, work at Chez Hope, the local domestic violence shelter, in their thrift shop, and volunteer at Matthew 25 International which conducts outreach work in countries such as Haiti, Peru, and India.

Due to Covid, Sager Brown has been closed and WUMC had to cancel our 2020 trip. However, according to Mary Boudreaux who is on the Sager Brown staff, things are looking up. She sends the following message:

“Greetings from Sager Brown,

Everyone here at Sager Brown is missing you all!  We hope you and your families are doing  well.

Sager Brown campus/UMCOR update--Unfortunately, we have extended the closure period through out July 2021. A definite reopen date at this time is still unknown. We pray this is the last extended period. Note, if we were to receive an approval date to reopen our campus, there will first be a period of time that will be needed to rehire staff, deep clean campus, restock all departments as needed to host volunteers and so forth. We are eager to have you all walking our Holy Grounds!”

We are excited to see things get back to normal here and at Sager Brown. Look forward to another trip being planned sometime in the near future!
